Western Missouri Antique Tractor & Machinery Association
WMAT&MA NEWS
AUGUST 2004
DONATIONS: Oerke Farms $200.00 cash. Jim Ketron gave us a load of belts
for the threshing machine. The railroad guys received $263.00 in donations during
the show. MFA oil of Butler brought fuel as the show was just beginning and
donated it. They had very little notice that the engine fellows were out of diesel,
but they were right there for us.
QUESTIONS: I have members ask questions from time to time.
I think I’ll use this forum to answer some of them. When does the fiscal
year begin? January one. Who picks member of the year? The last 5 members
to receive the award. What about the other recognition awards? The president
selects them, with suggestions from any of the five. They are usually pulled from
the list of nominees for man of the year. What does 501c3 mean? Our club is a 501c3
and because we have that status, any one donating to the club can take the value of
the gift off their taxes.
FOUND: The girls found a cordless drill in their kitchen that
someone left after repairs were made.
WEB: Don’t forget to look at our web page at
www.wmatma.com.
Kevin is making this a great site. Send him any cool stuff to
WELCOME: New life members, Delbert Hooper, Independence: Doug Snodgrass,
Appleton City: Raymond Smith, Harrisonville: Kathryn Hampton, Lake City,
Tx: Todd Johnson, Concordia: Farrell Sexson, Pleasant Hill: and Robert Burns from Fontana, Ks
and Kevin Johnson.
IN MY OPINION: Of course, the rain was the big topic during the show,
but I found a few things that really made me take notice. I was pleased to see 28
crawlers. I didn’t think that kind of number was possible given the weather and
the difficulty transporting all that heavy iron. I also thought over 20 cars were a
lot, given the mud. Collectors don’t like mud. I liked the “all services” flag
display and silhouette at the museum a lot. I am always impressed, after the show is
over each year on Sunday evening, when the Tenholder kids moves in to go over the grounds,
cleaning up any left behind trash. The almost canceled parade of power on Sunday turned
out to be one of the best ever. I was also surprised to see such a huge and enthusiastic
crowd on Sunday. One good thing about the rain, those members that normally never
have time to visit, had a chance to catch up with old friends like we haven’t done for
a long time. What a great year Fred Lewis picked to face lift the museum! Folks were
looking for buildings to get in and many took that opportunity to look over the “new”
museum and they liked it. How ‘bout the trams running in the rain. The King team
ran that program like a Swiss watch and the drivers never quit. I think Jim Ridley
held the largest Saturday crowd at the Blacksmith shop. And how ‘bout that anvil shoot
in the pouring rain...impossible, I think not!
There were disappointments too. For the first time since our beginning, no one
ground wheat or corn in the mill house. Charles and Helen were able to come over,
but could not work the mills. Richard reports it looks like our income from the
show will be about one-half normal. We will just have to tighten up our belt some.
I missed Buzz running around on his JD LUC truck.
AUCTION SCHOOL: Cliff Stefee has scheduled the 3 day school for
August 23, 24, 25 in the main office. The classes are free and if you are
interested call Cliff at 816 297 2246.
SUMMER PICNIC: August 29th bring a covered dish, your service and a
smile. The girls will furnish the drinks PLUS every one will get a sundae for
desert from the soda shop girls. We’ll eat at 1:00pm. Questions? Call Lillian
at 816 297 2776.
MEETING AUGUST 12th: This was a very good meeting and much was discussed.
Our stock of old buckles that are 5 years old or older will be sold at 5:00 each until
they are all gone.
Delbert ask for volunteers to be interviewed for anvil shooters
as he needs to step down because his stepper is slowing down. 816 297 2098. Don’t everyone
call at once.
Whether to change the annual show date or not is a big deal.
If you have suggestions or comments, see one of the committee checking it out.
Don Hill, Bill Parrish, John Rueter, Don Arndt or Leonard Walburn.
This committee will report at the annual meeting in Nov.
Details for our make up tractor pull was decided. September 18th, $5:00 hook up fee,

but the equipment we are not wanting to keep we are going to offer it back to
the donors. This is the equipment south of the southwest fence.

VIDDY IS HURTING: Our wonderful mowing tractor has a main pump
burned out and needs rebuilt. This has stung us some on our park grooming.
It is throwing more of a load on our other equipment. If you can see your
way clear, won’t you bring in a mower and take a turn? We can sure use some
more help ‘til Viddy is all well again.
