JULY - AUGUST 2008 News Letter

Don’t forget the Summer Picnic Aug. 23rd 4:00 PM eat at 5:00

  • Well our 30th Annual show is in the books. From my perspective it was a great show. We registered over 177 exhibitors; I heard a great many good comments from all I talked to. We registered 25 scale steam engines and a 7.5 gauge locomotive, and they put on quite a show. Threshing, plowing, saw milling and just being part of our show in general. The Spark Show they did on Friday and Saturday night was something you don’t get to see very often. The miniature horses put on a good show, and the teamsters would like to return to our show next year. The Exhibitors Dinner we put on Saturday evening serving about 350 was a success, I know it was a strain on the ladies to have us in there messing with their domain, but the exhibitors appreciated it. Thanks Ladies for humoring us and helping us out in everything. As usual the breakfast they served was great, but what else would it be? We picked up some new members there were 10 new or reinstated members this weekend. One joined Sunday afternoon and was at the show grounds helping out on Monday. This is the kind of interest we need to help keep the show going on.

  • Presidents Report: We had an outstanding workday Monday after the show. Big thanks to Bart Taylor with his skid steer, he helped unload and load the scale guys during the show and was busy Monday cleaning up, plus the improved dirt work he did for the grounds. Big thanks to new member, Joe Buffon he worked all Monday to clean up the show grounds and did a great job I hope he can make it to next years show. Bill Thurman worked hard to make sure the scale guys had what they needed for the show, good job. Bill Parrish had a great Massey display. I want to thank all the members that helped before; during and after the show, it was everybody’s hard work that made it a success. GOOD JOB EVERYBODY!!! I think Buddy had a great turn out on trucks and a few cars. Lavern’s’ horse tram also worked out great. Eric

    Greetings to all at WMATMA,
On behalf of the Prony Brake crew, (Peter Kieffer, Owen Oilman, Jim Todahl, Jane Christiansen, Jerry Christiansen) Jane and I thank you for inviting us to your show. We had a wonderful time. Our main contacts were Bill Thurman, Kevin Johnson and Joseph Villotti. These three fellows were excellent hosts. Usually the first thing Bill said when we met was, "What do you need now?" and the next thing was, and “What will you need in 10 minutes?" The questions may sound a bit negative in print, but the tone of voice and manner they were asked was simply a good host asking what he could do to make our visit even better. Anytime we needed anything, all we had to do was ask.
You folks have an excellent show. Your grounds are clean and neat with areas of shade. The food venders offered good food at a fair price. The bathrooms, showers and even the porta-potties were clean. I saw some engines and other displays I have not seen before. I am planning on using pictures of the Red Ball Special to stump some of the steam people around here. The anvil shoot was a lot of fun to watch.
Again, thank you for a very enjoyable weekend. If I give you the 'doe in the headlight' look when we meet again, please remind me of where we met the first time.

    Sincerely Jerry and Jane Christiansen

  • Duane’s Editorial: The above letter is just one of the very pleasing comments we have had from those who brought exhibits to this year’s show. I ask the exhibitors to list their email addresses when they registered and I was able to contact about 37 of them and about ten of them responded with similar comments. In the July board meeting we have discussed the interest that these exhibits drew, the Scale Model Engines, Prony Brake and the Miniature Horses. Some of these events cost us to have them appear at the show, but they are bringing life to the party. We have to keep the visiting public interested in things so they will come back to see what is happening next. The Anvil Shoot is something that some people have never seen. This year I saw the one on Sunday the first in about five years for me, and then they broke the anvil. We are even considering building a pavilion for the feature tractors instead of renting a large tent each year, which over the long run would pay for itself with the cost of tent rentals. I for one thought we put on a great show this year. I was able to get out on the grounds on Saturday and saw the scale steamers threshing, plowing and sawing wood. We implemented something new in the office this year of giving the exhibitors a bag with their buttons, dash plaques and other material. This helped with registering and checking in.
