SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2006 News Letter

EDITOR: Duane Craig
  • Kids Day October 3rd and Youth Day on October 10th we need your help in putting on a good show for these youngsters. Bring your machines and crafts to demonstrate. Workers are to be at the park by 7:30 AM for assignments. If you have a craft or something you want to share let me know so I can put it on the map.

  • Our heartfelt condolences go out to Lloyd Wilhite and family on the passing of his grandson. Check out the memorial page on www.wmatma.com

  • Donations: The Restoration Church which I mistakenly called by another name in the last Newsletter have given the association $300.00 and the same gift to the Women’s Auxiliary, for the use of the park for their retreat. Jack Wagner (Adrian Bank President) gave a $50.00 memorial for Charlie Fritts. Osage Valley Electrical CO-OP gave $150.00 donation for use of our Tram. Bob Highley gave $500.00 and Tim Hummel gave $418.00 for lumber for the Big Engine barn addition.

  • Picnic Report: There were a good number of folks at the picnic August 26, and there was a lot of great food and fellowship. Thanks to all who came and took part.

  • Member News: On Saturday September 2nd club members Charles Eagleburger, George Reed, and Shawn Hornbeck displayed tractors at the Tractor Supply Store in Belton with George and Shawn brought home trophies. Members Doug and Mary Engle, the Silver family, George and Betty Reed, Vic Jadlot and Charlie Forrester took tractors and Flea market items to the Power of the Past Show in Ottawa Kansas over the week end of Sept. 8-10. Others of us just went to look. The Feature was John Deere; there were a good number of Green tractors there. Our Club showed up with a rainbow of colors. It is good to be diverse we can add to any show.

  • Board Meeting: The Show Bill for next year was discussed at length. Changes were finalized; we hope to have a first printing out by the November meeting.
A committee was formed to address the placement of the Flea Market at next years show. Don Arndt, Bill Parrish, Kevin Johnson and Paul Villotti are to come with a recommendation for placing the flea market at next years show.
One of the needs not completely met at the last show was an inside the park tram; we are in need of trams running a complete circuit of the show grounds on a timely basis. It has been suggested that a sign up sheet be posted at the meetings and we know that we have enough tram drivers in advance of show dates. It is very hard to furnish transportation if we don’t have drivers. Finding drivers at the last minute is difficult. Remember this is your club and your show, please step up and help by being good host and transporting people around the grounds. I might add that Lewis and Paul King have done a great job to keep as many trams going as they have had drivers to do so. Give them a big thanks when you see them.
A progress reports on the addition to the engine barn. The forms were in and they were to pour the concrete on Friday the 15th. The walls and roof will be worked on as members have the time.
Kids Day and Ag Day were discussed: we need as many here to help us as possible. We will have the Museum, Blacksmith Shop, Grist Mill, Steam Engine, Saw Mill, Big Engines, Caboose and the South Prairie Railroad. The ladies will have persons in the Spruce Store, School House, Church and the Ice Cream Parlor. If you have a craft or machine to display please bring it to the park for these two very important days. This is probably the most important show days we have here. It is a time when we can spark an interest in these youngsters that will inspire them to become collectors and adult supporters of our quest to keep the things of the past alive.
I grew up in the time when there were blacksmith shops at most cross roads and I often thought had I been born 50 years sooner I would have been a smithy. There is just something appealing to me of the smell of a coal forge fire, the sound of the hammer on the cherry red metal. The sounds of the boiler fire and hiss of the steam in the steam engines, the smell of he heated oil on the metal of those big monsters. One of the most impressive sounds is that of the Rumley Tractor running on the sawmill or thrasher.
Oh well enough reminiscing on my part I had better finish this letter and get it in the mail.

    Thanks for your time.

    Duane
