  • Village happenings:
Well if you have been to the Show Grounds lately you have seen some changes. The large Worthington five cylinder Diesel Generator has been set on its pad and an enclosures has been started. This was a very large endeavor which a few of our members undertook. Thanks to Bill Thurman, David and Chris Jowett, Tim Hummel, Bob Highley and others from the club. Also some non-members contributed greatly. Earlier in the year when this proposal was made it seemed like an insurmountable task, what steps would be necessary for the club to get this big engine. The City of Odessa MO. was so easy to work with and accommodating to us that we now have the engine on its pad just north of the mill house. The generator on the large nine cylinder engine had to be moved before we could get the 5 cylinder out of the building. We were able to remove it and scrap it out, selling enough scrap to pay for the construction of the pad and enclosure for this engine.

  • Kids Day:
On October 5th we hosted Kids day, there were fourth grade children from Adrian, Butler, Ballard and Miami Schools, plus two or three Home Schools attending. This is the 11th year that we have been hosting this event. There were about 180 students plus a number of teachers, parents and other helpers at the Village for our Annual Kids Day. There were fifteen stations where the children were exposed to some of the crafts and skills of yesteryear. We added one new station this year; the Thrashers Cook Shack was new this year. Thanks to Ed Stamps and his wife who demonstrated this artifact of an era gone by. We also enjoyed the Osage Spinners making yarn and the Miller Family cooking apple butter. The ladies aux. demonstrated the school, church, store and ice cream parlor. They also made us a tasty lunch for the workers at noon time. Thanks Ladies.
Each of the teachers and parents I have spoken with had a very good time and said the children enjoyed it and were interested in all of the demonstrations.
Special thanks go to Ed Arndt, who is the main stay in Kids Day he contacts the schools and gets the apples and oversees the cider pressing. Thanks Ed.

  • Swap Meet:
October 15th and 16th, what a grand week end to be out and about. The weather was great we had 42 vendors at the swap meet; there was a great variety of merchandise to select from. I hope that the vendors were as pleased with the weekend as I was. There were a number of other activities competing with us; I just hope there were enough people to make each event a success.

  • Board Meetings:
There hasn’t been any unusual business at the board meeting just the usual paying bills and taking care of normal business. The Ladies Aux. want each family to bring two dozen cookies for hot chocolate night.

  • Duane’s thoughts:
When I was out this weekend I remembered just how much I enjoy the fall of the year. As the sun makes its journey towards the southern hemisphere, it was bright and warm, not hot and steamy as June and July had been. I always enjoyed the fall as a youth even if it meant that school was back in session. In those days we didn’t start back until after Labor Day that seemed like autumn, not late summer. When I was at home, September and October meant that there were pumpkins to harvest, Corn to cut and shock for winter feed. Making sure that the root vegetables were stored properly, in preparation for the cold winter months. In those days there were local truckers who made trips to places like Waverly MO., to visit the apple orchards. They would buy a truck load of apples and peddle them all over the country side. The cool mornings and warm afternoons were a little more enjoyable with a fresh northern MO. apple when I got home from school. Well so much for my musings about a time long long gone for me.

    Until Next Time,
    Duane Craig
